Since 1776, a grand building stands on the Strand Street which is at the right of Central London famously called the ‘Somerset House’. This building has renovated and restored since its building quite a number of times. Further additions have also been built to the Somerset House since the construction of its original structure. There is no solid proof and information about who built this magnificent building. The most awe – inspiring feature about this amazing building is its grand gateway that rises as high as three stories. What we know is that the Somerset House was used as a royal palace and the Queen Elizabeth I lived there. However since a civil war broke out in 1649, the house got converted into an army headquarter and sometimes even for the lodging of Parliamentary people.
It is known that in 1685, Sir Christopher Wren refurbished it. Again in the 18th century the Somerset House began to be used for other purposes like for housing various Public offices like The Navy Office, The Salt Office etc. other people were often assigned the prestigious task of renovating and refurbishing the grand house and it is known that Sir William Chambers was one of them to redesign the building. But the major work was done after his death by James Wyatt who mainly completed all the construction work that was left. Many other governmental offices were housed here turn by turn like the Poor Law Commissioners, Marriage and Death certificates and even the Royal College of Arts.
